Now that's a lot of money! But the thing is, it's only the total you spend on cigarettes in one year. So just for a second stop and think: how many years have you been smoking? And how many more years will you carry on smoking? You are, have been and will continue to spend thousands and thousands on cigarettes and smoking paraphernalia unless you quit! How many other hobbies, passed times, habits or pleasurable activities do you know of that cost that kind of money?!! The only one I can think of is alcohol, but most people still don't spend this kind of money drinking! Think about the things you could buy and do with that money. If you're like most smokers and smoke 20 a day, these are some of the things you could have bought or spent that money on:
So not only is smoking putting you at risk or illness but it is seriously crippling your spending power! In Economics there is a term called 'Opportunity Cost' and it basically means, the cost of an alternative that you must lose out on when you spend your money. Or another way, it is the benefits you could have received had you not made a certain choice. How does this relate to you and smoking? Well, when you choose to spend your money on cigarettes, your 'Opportunity Cost' is any of the things listed above - To smoke you have to do without those things! So what if you want to smoke and do those things? Well it will cost you double! Why? Because the money you could have spent on a two week trip for two to the Maldives, for example, was spent on cigarettes. Now if you want to take that trip, you have to spend that money again. So in reality smoking costs you double the figure you came to above with the calculator. Scary isn't it! Any small investment you make to quit smoking will no doubt, if successfull, pay for itself in a matter of weeks, leaving you with thousands in extra spending money every year - for the rest of your life!
